This remarkable tree stands between the cathedral and War Memorial garden. It can be immediately spotted by vitue of its irregular and deformed bark in the lower section of its trunk.
The identification plaque names it as Platanus orientalis but this is disputed by some botanists. One alternative name is Baobab Plane.
A smaller version of the same species grows nearby in the garden of Meister Omers NB there is no public access to this area.
